Kobo Libra H2O
My Kindle alternative of choice is Kobo Libra H2O. I found it via Wirecutter. I’ve been using it for several months now and can recommend it. But there are a few things you may want to know before buying it.
You can’t legally read books bought from the Amazon Kindle Store on Kobo. Amazon protects its books against that.
Books bought outside of Amazon (for example, directly from publishers) work fantastically.
On that note, you may want to wait until you have read all your Kindle books before purchasing Kobo. It took me several months to deal with the queue of books on my Kindle before I was able to start using the new reader.
Kobo might not be directly available in your country. It isn’t directly available in mine. I was able to buy it nonetheless via proshop.com. If Kobo isn’t officially available in your country, look for alternative sources.
When I tried the Kobo Store for the first time, the book selection was surprisingly small. To fix this, I set my location to the US. This way, I was able even to preorder The 99% Invisible City.
Switching to Kobo requires intentionality, but it’s worth it to support smaller companies. Also, you’ll love Kobo’s design.
